Trade Show Reception Desk: Booth Front Desk Options and Sizes

Trade Show Reception Desk: Booth Front Desk Options and Sizes

Short answer: A trade show reception desk is the front counter for a booth or event check-in. If your booth travels, look for a counter sold as portable. The Archic reception desks below are different: they are permanent-style desks, and most ship flat-packed for one-time assembly. Their product pages do not describe them as portable, on wheels, or built for repeated pack-down, so they suit a fixed event space, exhibit hall lobby or company-owned display better than a booth you ship to every show.

Trade show reception desk: portable counter or permanent desk?

Before you compare styles, decide how often the desk will move. A desk you set up at ten shows a year needs a different build from one that stays in a lobby, a registration area or a permanent exhibit space.

  • Moves show to show: look for a counter sold specifically as portable, with a carrying case. None of the Archic desks on this page are described that way.
  • Stays in one place: a flat-packed desk assembled once, such as the ones below, is a better fit.

The Malibu, Miami and Quad Tech Class 1 pages say they ship flat-packed (the Quad Tech in a crate), and the ADA Malibu lists a knockdown design. That describes how it arrives and goes together, not that it is meant to be taken apart after every event.

Trade show booth front desk: how much booth does it take?

The industry standard trade show booth is 10 feet by 10 feet, or 100 square feet. Against that width, a 4-foot desk takes 40 percent of the front and a 6-foot desk takes 60 percent, which leaves less room for visitors to walk in. Check your exhibitor manual for counter and display height limits before you buy.

For a two-person booth or event welcome desk, look at the 2-person reception desk collection. For compact spaces, see the 48-inch reception desk collection.

Trade show computer desks: cables and storage

Most booth front desks hold a laptop, a tablet or a card reader. Several of these desks have grommet holes for routing cables, including the Maddox, Malibu and Quad Tech Class 1. Check the product page for the desk you choose, because cable holes and storage vary by model. The Miami and Quad Tech Class 1 add lighting, which the pages describe as standard or built-in.

Trade show reception counter height and ADA

If visitors will check in or ask questions at your counter, plan an accessible section. Under the 2010 ADA Standards, a sales or service counter needs a portion that is at least 36 inches long and no more than 36 inches high above the floor. Whether your event or venue must comply depends on the space and local rules, so confirm with the venue or your local building authority.

The ADA Malibu product page says it has a drop-down section for ADA use, and asks you to check your local building code. For a full walk-through of counter heights and clear floor space, see our guide to ADA reception desk height. To choose a width, see receptionist desk size.

Which desk for which situation

  • Fixed exhibit or lobby space that needs lighting: Miami or Quad Tech Class 1.
  • White counter with a grey riser and a listed 38-inch height: Maddox White Reception Counter.
  • Color choice and quick assembly: Malibu.
  • Accessible service section: ADA Malibu.
  • Portable pop-up counter for every show: a dedicated portable exhibit counter, not the desks here.

You can see all of them in the reception desks collection.

Frequently asked questions

Are Archic reception desks portable trade show counters?
No. Several product pages describe flat-packed or knockdown shipping for assembly on arrival, and none describe the desks as portable or on wheels. They fit a permanent or semi-permanent event space better than a booth you move often.

What is the standard trade show booth size?
10 feet by 10 feet, or 100 square feet, is the industry standard. Your show organizer can confirm the space and any height rules.

How tall should a trade show reception counter be?
Under the 2010 ADA Standards, the accessible portion of a sales or service counter is at least 36 inches long and no higher than 36 inches. The Maddox is listed at 38 inches tall, which is above that 36-inch limit.

Do these desks have places to run cables?
The Maddox, Malibu and Quad Tech Class 1 pages list grommet holes. Check each product page before you buy.

Can two people work at one desk?
See the 2-person reception desk collection for workstation-style desks.
