Bedroom furniture at Archic Furniture starts with the bed: platform beds and panel beds, bunk beds and futon bunk beds, with links below to cabinet Murphy beds, dressers, nightstands and mirrors. Beds here come from Night and Day Furniture, Alpine Furniture, LH Imports, Union Home and other brands, in sizes from twin to California king depending on the model. Dressers and nightstands to match are in their own collections, and the guide below covers bed sizes, room clearances and materials.

Bed sizes: how big is each mattress and frame?

Standard U.S. mattress sizes are the same across most brands, but the frame around the mattress is wider and longer. Use the frame footprint, not the mattress size, when you measure a room.

Size Mattress (W x L, inches) Night and Day P-Series frame footprint (W x D, inches)
Twin 38 x 75 43 x 80
Full 54 x 75 58 x 80
Queen 60 x 80 64 x 85
King 76 x 80 82 x 85
California king 72 x 84 76 x 85

Mattress sizes are industry-standard; some brands list a full at 53 inches wide. Frame footprints are from the Night and Day Basic Bed (P-Series) page and vary by model, so check the size listed on the bed you choose. Night and Day sells its P-Series as its original platform bed height (14 inches high on the Basic Bed), and its K-Series sits higher so it can use deeper optional drawers and a trundle.

For exact cabinet bed footprints, see the Murphy cabinet bed size guide.

Bunk beds and futon bunk beds

Night and Day Furniture bunk beds are built from rubberwood solids and veneers. A futon bunk bed puts a twin bed on top and a full-size futon underneath, so the lower bunk works as a sofa by day and a bed for sleepovers. The Cinnamon Twin/Futon Bunk Bed is 68 inches high and has 11 slats spaced 2 3/4 inches apart.

Federal bunk bed rules (16 CFR Part 1513) require the instructions to say that children under 6 years of age should not use the upper bunk and that guardrails should be used on both sides of the upper bunk.

Dresser and nightstand sizing

Dresser and nightstand sizes vary by collection, so check the dimensions on each product page. These are examples from Archic product pages:

Piece Height x width x depth (inches)
Night and Day Secrets 1-Drawer Nightstand 25 x 23 x 19
Night and Day Clove 2-Drawer Nightstand 24 x 25 x 19
Union Home Daniel Nightstand 26 x 24 x 18
Night and Day Clove 6-Drawer Dresser 31 x 62 x 19
Night and Day Secrets 7-Drawer Dresser 34 x 58 x 20
Union Home Daniel Dresser 41 x 72 x 21

Two rules of thumb from bedroom layout guides: leave about 30 inches of clearance where you walk (30 to 36 inches around a queen bed), and choose a nightstand whose top is level with the top of the mattress or slightly lower. Measure the width of the wall before you pick a dresser, and leave room in front of it to pull the drawers all the way out.

Materials you will find here

  • Mahogany: Alpine Furniture's Potter collection uses mahogany solids and veneers.
  • Oak: Union Home's Daniel dresser and nightstand are made from FSC Certified Oak.
  • Acacia: LH Imports beds such as the Gia are made from solid acacia.
