What Size Mattress Fits a Cabinet Bed? (Tri-Fold Guide)

What Size Mattress Fits a Cabinet Bed? (Tri-Fold Guide)

Cabinet bed mattress size follows the bed's size, twin, full or queen, but thickness decides whether it fits. On the cabinet beds we carry, the mattress runs 4 to 6 inches thick, and most are tri-fold foam designed to fold into thirds and store inside the cabinet when the bed is closed.

That thickness surprises a lot of people. A queen Murphy cabinet bed gives you a full queen size sleeping surface, yet the mattress has to fold up small enough to disappear into a cabinet that stands about 36 to 42 inches tall on most models. Knowing the right cabinet bed mattress size for your model matters most when you're choosing between a Complete Set and a Cabinet Only option, upgrading to a hybrid, or replacing a worn mattress years down the line.

Cabinet Bed Mattress Size by Model

Our cabinet Murphy bed collection covers twin, full and queen, and each maker pairs its Murphy cabinet beds with a specific mattress. Where a product page doesn't publish a thickness, the table says so.

The Sealy San Sebastian publishes the most detail of the group. Its mattress is 75 inches long and 5 inches thick, at 35.5 inches wide for the twin, 52.5 for the full and 59.5 for the queen. Arason lists its queen as a standard 60 by 80 inch mattress that's 6 inches thick, and its Madrid model spells out the layers: 4 inches of base foam under 2 inches of softer foam.

Why a Murphy Cabinet Bed Uses a Tri-Fold Mattress

The answer sits in how the bed opens. On an Arason Creden-ZzZ, a large storage drawer telescopes out on felt-covered runners to become the bed frame, then the front panel folds down to form a solid sleeping platform. Once open, it works much like a low platform bed. When it's closed, the mattress lies folded inside the freestanding cabinet, and Arason notes that in most cases it even ships packed in there.

A tri-fold mattress for a cabinet bed has to bend in two places without losing its shape, stay light enough to unfold easily, and still be comfortable on a flat platform. Every standard set in our range is a foam mattress, with coils reserved for Night and Day's hybrid upgrade. The Night and Day credenza queens rest the mattress on 7 slats spaced 4.25 inches apart. If you're curious about the rest of the mechanism, our explainer on how a cabinet bed works covers it step by step.

Do Murphy Beds Need Special Mattresses?

For cabinet beds, usually yes. A regular one-piece queen mattress is far too thick to fold into a cabinet, so it won't work even when the width and length match. The tri-fold is the special part, and it's why most of our Complete Sets come with the mattress already matched to the cabinet.

There are two models where a regular mattress can come into play. Night and Day's Orion listing says the twin takes a standard twin and the full a standard full, with an optional 4-inch tri-fold made for the cabinet, so check the thickness with us before using a mattress you already own. The Night and Day Artisan Desk Bed takes a standard twin mattress, as long as it's 6 inches thick or less, because the bed folds down out of a desk and the mattress travels with it. Straps hold the mattress and bedding in place when the bed folds away, and a low-profile foam or tri-fold twin works best. For a broader look at mattress types, see our guide to choosing a Murphy bed mattress.

Gel Memory Foam Mattress or Hybrid Pocket Coil?

On the Murphy Cube and the Night and Day credenza queens, you choose the mattress at checkout. Night and Day Furniture describes its gel memory foam mattress as a cooling gel top over a supportive foam base with plush, pressure-relieving comfort, ideal for guest rooms and occasional use. The hybrid pocket coil upgrade uses individually wrapped coils for fuller support, less motion transfer and cooler sleep, and it's built for every-night use.

The price difference is easy to weigh because it's the same across the line. Moving from the standard Complete Set to the hybrid adds $200 on every one of those models, so the Murphy Cube goes from $1,897 to $2,097 and the Clover from $2,797 to $2,997. If someone will sleep on the bed most nights, that upgrade is usually money well spent.

Foam quality matters too. The Polyurethane Foam Association's guide to foam performance explains that firmness and density are separate properties, so a soft foam can still be dense and durable. That's a useful reminder when a replacement mattress is sold on feel alone.

Matching Cabinet Bed Mattress Size When You Replace One

Night and Day's Cabinet Only option ships without a mattress and costs less than the Complete Set, $200 less on the Murphy Cube and $300 less on the credenza queens. That option makes sense if you already own a compatible tri-fold. If you're shopping for a cabinet bed replacement mattress down the road, start by matching three things from the table above: the bed size, the thickness, and whether the mattress folds in thirds.

Then check the safety label. The Consumer Product Safety Commission's mattress guidance explains that federal flammability rules under 16 CFR parts 1632 and 1633 apply to mattresses and mattress sets, so an unbranded tri-fold from an unfamiliar seller is worth a closer look. Also keep in mind that Arason won't accept returns on mattresses that have been opened, so confirm the fit with us before you unwrap anything.

Caring for a Tri-Fold Mattress

A folding mattress spends most of its life closed up in a cabinet, out of the way and off your floor space, so a little airflow goes a long way. We recommend taking it out and letting it air for a few hours about once every three months to keep moisture from building up. Rotate it now and then so it wears evenly, use a mattress cover, and spot clean with mild detergent and water, letting it dry completely before you fold it away. Night and Day backs the mattresses in its Complete Sets with a limited 3-year warranty.

Signs Your Cabinet Bed Mattress Needs Replacing

Because a guest bed gets used in bursts, wear can creep up without anyone noticing. Rotating the mattress regularly helps stop sagging and body indentations from forming, so if you open the bed and find a dip that doesn't recover after airing, the foam has likely started to break down. Other signs are a mattress that no longer folds neatly, a cover that has stretched or torn along the fold lines, or guests mentioning they could feel the platform underneath.

When that happens, measure the old mattress before you shop. Width, length and thickness should all match the original, and the fold should fall in the same places so the cabinet closes and latches the way it did on day one. If you still have the product name, give us a call and we'll look up the exact mattress your model was designed around.

FAQs

It depends on the cabinet. The Night and Day Orion full takes a standard full mattress, with an optional 4-inch tri-fold made for it, while the Sealy San Sebastian full uses its own 52.5 by 75 inch Sealy mattress. Arason's full Madrid and Coffee/Espresso come with a 6-inch tri-fold included.

On the Murphy Cube, the queen mattress ships in its own 63 by 11 by 11 inch box at 42 pounds packed, so you can lift it out for airing or carry it upstairs separately from the cabinet.

No. Arason includes its tri-fold on every Creden-ZzZ, and the Sealy San Sebastian, Vintage White Murphy Cube, Siesta Desk Bed and Louvre come with theirs. The Murphy Cube, Orion and credenza queens let you choose a Complete Set or Cabinet Only, and the Artisan Desk Bed is sold without a mattress.

Use matters more than age. A guest bed opened a few weekends a year will wear far more slowly than one slept on nightly, which is where the hybrid pocket coil upgrade earns its place. Night and Day's 3-year mattress warranty is the coverage to plan around.
