IKEA Murphy Bed: Does IKEA Sell One? Options, Kits and Sizes (2026)
Short answer: No. As of September 2026, IKEA does not sell a Murphy bed, wall bed or cabinet bed in the US, and it does not sell Murphy bed hardware kits. Searching ikea.com for "murphy bed", "wall bed" or "cabinet bed" brings up daybeds, sleeper sofas, pull-out and extendable beds, and storage cabinets. An "IKEA Murphy bed" is a DIY build: PAX wardrobes around a Murphy bed hardware kit bought from another company. If you don't want to mount anything to the wall, a free-standing cabinet bed is the other main option.
Does IKEA sell a Murphy bed in 2026?
No. We checked IKEA's US website in September 2026. Searches for "murphy bed", "wall bed", "cabinet bed", "folding bed" and "murphy bed kit" returned no fold-up wall bed, no cabinet bed and no lift mechanism. IKEA's related-search suggestions for "murphy bed" include sleeper sofas, sofa beds, daybeds, loft beds and pull-out beds. IKEA Canada's site gave the same answer: a "murphy bed" search there returns sofa-beds.
So when people ask whether IKEA has, makes or sells a Murphy bed, the answer is no. IKEA does sell the wardrobes many DIY builders use. The folding mechanism has to come from somewhere else.
What IKEA sells instead: space-saving beds
If you want a bed that takes up less room during the day but don't need it to fold into a wall, IKEA has several types. On the US site, most of these are listed in twin size:
- Daybeds with drawers (for example HEMNES, BRIMNES and FLEKKE) that work as a sofa by day.
- Stackable beds (UTÅKER), extendable beds (GLAMBERGET, BUSUNGE) and pull-out beds (SLÄKT), plus trundle beds.
- Sleeper sofas in several styles, including FRIDHULT, GRUNNARP and SÖDERHAMN.
- Loft beds (TUFFING) that free up the floor underneath.
None of these fold up against a wall or into a cabinet. For many small rooms, though, one of them is the simplest fix.
How the IKEA Murphy bed hack works
An "IKEA Murphy bed" or "Murphy bed with IKEA cabinets" is a DIY project, not a product. Published builds usually take one of two routes:
- A hardware kit inside a PAX surround. You buy a Murphy bed hardware kit from another company and install it to the wall by following that kit's instructions. Then you build PAX wardrobes and doors around it so the bed looks like part of a wall of closets. In one documented build, the bed frame bolted directly to the wall and the PAX cabinets only covered it for looks.
- A fully custom build. Some DIYers build the bed from PAX frames, IKEA slatted bed bases, timber and hinges, with no dedicated mechanism. That takes more woodworking skill, and how safe it is depends entirely on the builder.
Some IKEA product facts matter for either route. PAX frames are made of fiberboard, particleboard and paper foil. IKEA's PAX pages carry a tipping-hazard warning that the product "must be securely anchored." That means both routes involve drilling into the wall. The folding mechanism's safety and weight limits come from the kit maker, not IKEA.
Twin, full or queen: sizing an IKEA Murphy bed
Standard US mattresses measure 38 x 75 inches (twin), 54 x 75 inches (full) and 60 x 80 inches (queen). PAX frames come 19 5/8, 29 1/2 and 39 3/8 inches wide, 22 7/8 inches deep, and in two heights: 79 1/4 inches or about 93 inches.
- Width: the widest PAX frame is barely wider than a twin mattress and narrower than a full or queen. That is why documented full and queen builds place two or more frames around the bed.
- Height: a queen mattress stood on end is 80 inches tall, which is more than the shorter 79 1/4-inch PAX frame. The ceiling matters too. IKEA says the shorter frames can be assembled upright with a ceiling of at least 79 1/2 inches, and the taller frames need at least 93 1/4 inches.
- Vertical vs horizontal: a vertical Murphy bed folds up on its short side and needs a taller wall. A horizontal Murphy bed folds up on its long side, so it suits low ceilings but needs a wider wall. Sizing guides commonly cite about 82 inches of ceiling height for a vertical bed and at least 80 inches of wall width for a horizontal one. Always check the kit maker's specs.
Wall-mounted Murphy beds (not from IKEA)
A traditional Murphy bed is hinged at one end so it stores upright against a wall or inside a cabinet. Modern ones use pistons or springs to make lifting and lowering easier. They are sold complete by Murphy bed makers, so you don't need to build a cabinet yourself.
Because the bed swings down from the wall, installation matters. In 2022 the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission recalled one manufacturer's wall beds after reports that they could "break or detach from the wall." Whether you buy a complete wall bed or build one around a kit, follow the anchoring instructions exactly.
Cabinet beds: a Murphy bed alternative with no wall mounting
A cabinet bed, sometimes called a Murphy cabinet bed, is a free-standing piece of furniture. The mattress folds inside a chest or credenza and unfolds onto a frame in front of it. Nothing gets bolted to the wall or floor, so renters and people who move often can use one. Here are a few examples in each size:
- Queen: the Night and Day Murphy Cube is 64.1" W x 26.4" D x 36.6" H closed and opens to 80.3" long. It is completely freestanding with no wall or floor mounting, it assembles in about 15 minutes with no tools, and it supports up to 500 lbs. Complete sets include a tri-fold gel memory foam mattress, and a cabinet-only option is also offered.
- Full or queen: the Arason Creden-ZzZ Madrid is 23" deep and comes 58" wide (full) or 64" wide (queen), opening to 76" or 81". It needs no floor or wall mounting, comes with a 6-inch tri-fold foam mattress and supports up to 500 lbs. Its flip-top hinges let the top open without clearing it off.
- Twin or full: the Night and Day Orion is solid rubberwood and needs no wall installation. It is rated for 500 lbs and comes as a complete set with a 4-inch tri-fold gel memory foam mattress or as cabinet only.

Which option should you choose?
- You want a bed that matches a wall of IKEA closets and you are comfortable with a DIY build: the PAX-plus-kit route.
- You want a true fold-up wall bed without building the cabinet yourself: a complete wall-mounted Murphy bed.
- You rent, can't drill into the wall, or may move the bed later: a cabinet bed.
- You only need a sofa by day and a twin bed at night: an IKEA daybed or sleeper sofa may be enough.
